CTOs guide to the telco edge: from devices to clouds

The telco edge can take many shapes depending on the geography, the existing network infrastructure, current and future services to be delivered. No two telcos, today, have the same perceived needs. Additionally, these needs might change drastically depending on what the future holds for new services such as 5G, IOT or AI at the edge. Join Canonical’s telco team to hear about the strategies and tactics you can adopt to build an edge that can match your requirements of today and tomorrow.

Future-proofing Fingbox: The IoT home network monitoring device

Fing App is a network scanning and troubleshooting tool used by millions. Fingbox is a complementary hardware device which plugs into Wi-Fi routers to monitor, secure and troubleshoot networks and their connected devices. Fing’s engineering team built Fingbox using Ubuntu Core and Snaps to speed up development time, save budget and resources and ensure a future-proofed product went to market. Initial development speed was massively improved as Fing engineering resources could concentrate on building product features for our users and not on OS/platform development as this comes ready to go with Ubuntu Core. The ability to upgrade seamlessly within hours was fundamental during the Fingbox product launch phase and it’s as important now that the product is in production. In this webinar, you’ll hear from Fing Co-Founder and Big Data Architect, Carlo Medas, on how Fingbox was built with Ubuntu Core and how Fingbox’s key features including parental control, Digital Fence and Digital Presence are updated and improved ongoing using Snaps.

Someone could be eavesdropping on you right now (man-in-the-middle attack)! – It is SSH thing

user1@host1: ssh user1@host2

How many of you noticed  below warning message during your attempt to connect remote hosts using SSH

” Someone could be eavesdropping on you right now (man-in-the-middle attack)! “

If you are the one wondering the meaning of this warning, you should go through this post  and understand Solaris Secure Shell.

We all know Secure Shell ( known as SSH) as a remote connectivity program to securely log into a remote machine and execute commands. SSH is a replacement for unsecured remote connectivity utilities like ( telnet, rlogin , rsh ..etc), it basically encrypts the data at source host before initiating the communication between to remote hosts and then decrypt the data back to original form at the destination end.

Solaris Secure Shell is a Oracle Supported version of SSH derived from OpenSSH, and is fully integrated with solaris 9 and later versions ( not available in Solaris 8 and earlier versions).

The inetd daemon

The inetd daemon is best described as a super-server, created to manage many daemons or services. It listens to multiple ports, and invokes only requested services.

This reduces the load that services place on a system, because it means that network services – such as telnet, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) – can be activated on demand rather than having to run continuously.

When a system initializes, the inetd daemon needs to determine its configuration information. To do this, the daemon accesses two files – /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf. Continue reading “inetd Vs xinetd in linux”

EMC PowerPath Multipathing automatically tunes your storage area network (SAN) and selects alternate paths for your data if necessary. Residing on the server, PowerPath Multipathing enhances SAN performance and application availability. It also integrates multiple-path I/O capabilities, automatic load balancing, and path failover functions for complete path management.

PowerPath Multipathing supports a wide range of servers including cluster servers connected to EMC Symmetrix, EMC CLARiiON, EMC Invista, Hitachi Data Systems Lightning, HP XP, IBM Enterprise Storage Server, and HPQ storage systems. Virtual Servers are supported by EMC PowerPath/VE. Continue reading “EMC Power Path commands for system administrators”

Make your recruitment process awesome

I am writing this post for those young brothers who are very well qualified for job requirement, but still struggling to receive an offer of appointment.

When ever I had a chance for discussion with fresh engineers, I always tried to explain them that the job recruitment process is not just “an interview and an offer process”  but it is a series of phases where success at every phase depends on many variable factors in addition to candidate skill set.

There are several phases involved in job recruitment process,  that you need to understand.

IPMP Configurations – In Solaris 8 & 9

Summary of typical IPMP Configurations:

1.  Production and test interfaces in the same IP subnet

1.1  With defaultrouter
1.2  Without defaultrouter
1.3  With dedicated hosts acting as test targets with “host-routes”
1.4  Configuration example for 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3

2.  Production and test interfaces in different IP subnets but the same physical network

2.1  With defaultrouter in production subnet and test subnet
2.2  With defaultrouter in production subnet but without defaultrouter in test subnet
2.3  With dedicated hosts acting as test targets with “host-routes”
2.4  Configuration example for 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3
2.5  Configuration example for 2.2 if you use IPMP on the test subnet Continue reading “IPMP Configurations – In Solaris 8 & 9”
